There are three distinct protozoeal substages.
First protozoea
- formation of all thoracic somites
- unstalked compound eyes and naupliar eye
- abdomen unsegmented ending in bilobed telson
- swimming with two pairs of antennae and first two maxillipeds
- continuous swimming and feeding
Second protozoea
Third protozoea
- appearance of biramous uropods
- telson distinct from sixth abdominal segment
